The Facts: Do Smart Doorbells Deter Burglars?

Smart doorbells have become an increasingly popular home security feature, offering homeowners real-time video surveillance and remote access via smartphone apps. But do they actually deter burglars, or are they just a high-tech convenience?

In this blog, we’ll examine the effectiveness of smart doorbells in preventing break-ins and whether they’re a worthwhile investment for your home security.

How do smart doorbells work?

Smart doorbells are equipped with cameras, microphones, and motion sensors, allowing homeowners to see, hear, and communicate with visitors, even when they’re not at home. Many models offer features such as:

  • Live video streaming: view real-time footage of who is at your door.
  • Motion detection alerts: receive notifications when someone approaches your property.
  • Two-way audio: speak to visitors remotely through a built-in speaker and microphone.
  • Night vision: monitor your entrance even in low-light conditions.
  • Cloud storage: store video footage for later review.

With these features, smart doorbells provide increased visibility and control over home access. But do they actually stop criminals from attempting a break-in?

Do smart doorbells deter burglars?

The research certainly seems to suggest so. According to the police, homes with simple security measures (such as smart doorbells) were five times less likely to be burgled than homes with no security measures. However, surveys and studies don’t always feel representative of the real world, and sceptics of the smart doorbell exist, whether it’s down to ongoing data issues or it serving as an attractive force.

The presence of a visible security device — such as a smart doorbell — can act as a deterrent, but its effectiveness depends on several factors.

1. The psychological deterrent

Most burglars prefer to avoid properties where they might be recorded. A smart doorbell with a visible camera may make them think twice before approaching. According to crime prevention experts, burglars often seek easy targets, so the risk of being caught on camera can push them to move on to a less protected home.

Of US homeowners who have installed a smart doorbell, 60% report feeling safer after installing it, showing that there is a psychological benefit for homeowners, as well as a deterrent for burglars.

2. Immediate alerts and response

One of the biggest advantages of smart doorbells is their ability to notify homeowners of unusual activity. If a potential intruder approaches, the homeowner can use the two-way audio feature to speak through the doorbell, making it seem like someone is home. In some cases, this can be enough to scare off a would-be burglar.

3. Video evidence for law enforcement

While a smart doorbell may not physically stop a determined burglar, the recorded footage can be invaluable if a crime does occur. High-quality video evidence can help police identify and catch criminals, increasing the chances of recovering stolen property.

The London Metropolitan Police have cited smart doorbell video footage as a key source of evidence in securing a manslaughter conviction, as well as Avon and Somerset Police.

Limitations of smart doorbells

While smart doorbells offer useful security features, they do have limitations.

  • They don’t physically prevent break-ins: unlike a traditional alarm system, a smart doorbell doesn’t stop an intruder from forcing entry.
  • Criminals may disguise themselves: some burglars are aware of security cameras and may cover their faces to avoid identification.
  • Wi-Fi dependency: many smart doorbells rely on a stable internet connection. If your Wi-Fi goes down, so does your remote access.
  • Limited coverage: a smart doorbell only monitors the front entrance, leaving other entry points vulnerable unless additional cameras are installed.
  • Attracts criminals: smart doorbells can signal that homeowners have something to protect, potentially attracting more burglars.

Should you invest in a smart doorbell?

A smart doorbell can be a valuable addition to your home security setup, but it works best when combined with other measures such as high-quality locks, security lighting, and an alarm system.

If you’re looking for a convenient way to monitor visitors and enhance security at your front door, a smart doorbell is a worthwhile investment. However, for full home protection, consider integrating it with a more comprehensive security system. It can still easily be circumvented by burglars simply covering their faces, therefore it really should not be used as a burglar deterrent.

Smart doorbells work with wider systems

Smart doorbells can be an effective deterrent for burglars, especially when they’re part of a layered security approach. They provide real-time monitoring, instant alerts, and valuable evidence in case of a crime.

However, they are not a standalone solution for home security. To truly protect your home, combining a smart doorbell with other security measures will offer the best defence against potential intruders.
